Cockroach Extermination & Pest Control

There are about 4,000 species of cockroach, of which 30 species are associated with human habitations and about four species are well known as pests. Cockroaches live up to a year. The female may produce up to eight egg cases in a lifetime; in favorable conditions, it can produce 300-400 offspring. However, other species of cockroaches can produce an extremely high number of eggs in a lifetime, and in some cases, a female only needs to be impregnated once to be able to lay eggs for the rest of her life. Cockroaches leave chemical trails in their feces as well as emitting airborne pheromones for swarming and mating. Other cockroaches will follow these trails to discover sources of food and water, and also discover where other cockroaches are hiding. Thus, cockroaches can exhibit emergent behavior, in which group or swarm behavior emerges from a simple set of individual interactions.

An interesting fact about cockroaches is they can survive complete decapitation for up to several weeks before dying of starvation or dehydration. Cockroaches are among the hardiest insects on the planet. They are even able to recover from being submerged underwater for half an hour. These insects feed on starch materials, and even nonfood materials such as nylon stockings. They prefer to hide in warm, elevated areas near the ceiling, behind wall decorations, pictures, baseboard molding, loose wallpaper, cracks around cabinets inside upholstered furniture underneath chairs and tables, under stoves, in closets, beneath or, in shower stalls and in electrical appliances such as TV sets, stereos, radios and toasters. If clusters of roaches are observed in the daylight that would indicate a large population.

The cockroach usually dwells both outdoors and indoors; it primarily breeds in sewer systems and underground utility networks, from which it then may invade structures.

The most common cockroach facing residents and business establishments of the Durham Region is the German Cockroach. These critters can multiply at alarming rates and can cause great frustration among citizens. However, are customers should not feel at a loss when seeking cockroach extermination. There are several options available when tackling any roach problem.

Treatment

One method for cockroach pest control is through the use of gel and powder. This method is the least invasive for the homeowner while still acheiving success. This application is safe for children and pets and does not require the customer to empty kitchen cabinets. It is often the method of choice when treating businesses for cockroaches and multi-unit dwellings. It should be noted that this method often does not work for highly infested detached homes. If there is a rather large infestation, a gel and powder application can often take a long time to acheive the desired results.

Another method when seeking pest control for cockroaches is a spray and fog. This method requires the homeowner to empty all kitchen cabinets (and often washroom drawers as well) so that a liquid application can take place. Depending on the circumstances, the homeowner is required to vacate the residence for a minimum of 3 hours. Upon return, it is completely safe for children and pets. This method when looking for a cockroach exterminator is one that targets cockroachs immediately and does not "bait" them as a gel would.
