8 Signs of a Worsening Raccoon Problem

20038428 sRaccoons are well known for their mischievous behaviours, especially during the night time hours. When not properly controlled, their nocturnal adventures, however harmless they may initially seem, can eventually become extremely damaging and burdensome to homeowners and business owners alike. While prevention from raccoon infestation is obviously the most advantageous solution, many homeowners and businesses don't realize that they have a problem until it is too late. Knowing what to look for can be essential for the early detection of a raccoon problem.

Signs that You May Have a Worsening Raccoon Problem

1. Actually seeing raccoons on or near your property can be a good indicator that you will soon have a raccoon problem; if you don't already. Raccoons typically forage for food as a family, so if you see one, the chances are good that there are others nearby.

2. Perhaps one of the most common signs of a raccoon problem is consistently overturned trash containers and strung out debris. Raccoons are curious creatures, and are often attracted to human waste. Placing latched lids on your trash containers and securing the containers with a rack, cable or chain to prevent them from overturning may help ward off these pesky varmints.

3. If you commonly notice partially eaten corn or melons in your garden, or your outdoor pet food seems to be disappearing rather quickly, you may very well have a raccoon problem. Raccoons are omnivores, and will eat a variety of foods when they are available.

4. Examine attic entries, chimney openings and rooftops for signs of damage. Raccoons are notorious for entering attics and other structures looking for shelter or simply out of curiosity.

5. Inspect surrounding trees with hollowed openings, areas under porches, outbuildings and chimneys for signs of a den. Although raccoons prefer to inhabit hollow logs and trees that are near sources of water, they sometimes construct their dens in other areas near their food source as well.

6. Watch for fecal droppings in the area. If you notice an abundance of fecal matter near your trash cans or garden, the chances are good that you have a raccoon problem.

7. Examine your property for raccoon tracks. Although the ground is a good place to start, you may also notice muddy raccoon prints on outbuildings, trash cans, vehicles, and surrounding structures indicating a raccoon problem.

8. Listen for strange noises, especially at night. Since raccoons are primarily nocturnal animals, you may notice sounds revealing their activity in attics or on rooftops during the night time hours.

What to Do if You Notice Signs of a Worsening Raccoon Problem at Your Home or Place of Business

Although trapping is one method by which a raccoon problem can be solved, your local area may have specific trapping and relocation regulations that must be followed. If you suspect that you may have a worsening raccoon problem, contacting your local professional pest control service for advice and more information will likely be your best bet.

Contacting a reputable pest control service at the first sign of a raccoon problem can keep the infestation from getting worse, essentially saving you an abundance of time, damages and money in the long run.
